Which sports carry the highest risk of eye injury?

Sports are an important part of living a happy, active life. The American Association of Ophthalmology recognizes April as Sports Eye Safety Month.  Advanced Eyecare and Dr. Mark Turk recommend caution, seeking treatment if you suspect an eye injury, and wearing protective eyewear if at an increased risk.

1. Basketball

Increased risk of being hit by another player or ball

2. Baseball

At risk for being hit by a ball or bat

3. Racquet Sports (Tennis, Pickleball, Badminton)

Racquets and balls can cause injuries. Protective eyewear should be worn.

4. Water Sports (Swimming, Diving)

Can result in injuries from other swimmers or objects

5. Hockey

Potential for collision with other players or pucks

6. Lacrosse

High speed balls and sticks can cause injuries

7. Football

Collisions can cause eye injuries

8. Extreme Sports

(Skiing, Snowboarding, Skateboarding)
Collisions and falling objects can cause injuries

9. Cycling

Increased risk of being hit or injured during a collision. Protective eyewear should be worn.

10. Martial Arts (Karate, Boxing)

Kicks, punches and head trauma can cause injuries
